Dr. McHugh graduated from the University of Scranton before spending a year as a full-time AmeriCorps volunteer in Boston. As an AmeriCorps volunteer, Dr. McHugh worked with high school aged youth to engage them in volunteerism and help them learn about pressing social issues affecting their communities. During that year he applied to medical school. Dr. McHugh ultimately chose to attend Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, where early in his education he was exposed to the fields of Medical Oncology and Hematology. Drawn by the opportunity to leverage the latest breakthroughs to help good people deal with often challenging situations, he knew after completing his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Rochester that he wanted to proceed on to subspecialty training in these fields. Dr. McHugh then completed his Fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology.
Dr. McHugh focuses on educating patients by helping them to understand recommendations and plans in easily understood language and avoids getting bogged down in complicated medical jargon. He works to set people at ease and makes them feel comfortable as he strives to align the right people with the right treatments, knowing that each person is an individual and should have their care personalized to best fit them.
Dr. McHugh is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Medical Oncology.
Outside of work, Dr. McHugh enjoys travelling and spending time with his wife and dog.
