What to Expect
Your first visit to our oncology {cancer} and hematology {blood diseases} practice can be a frightening and difficult time. Please rest assured you will be treated with utmost care and compassion.
When you arrive, often you will need blood work drawn first by one of our lab technicians (phlebotomists). You do not need to fast prior. You will be seen by one our physicians but our nurse practitioner, physician assistant or resident may see you first. They will obtain a comprehensive health history and exam. Please feel free to bring family or a friend with you for support and an extra set of "ears" as there can be a lot of information to absorb.
Some patients may need treatment, such as chemotherapy, blood products, other infusions or injections. We do not typically do this at your first visit. This will be arranged at a time that works for your schedule. Follow up appointments will allow time for teaching and support with our nursing team.
In addition, any co-payment / co-insurance that is required by your insurance company will be explained to you. If needed, you may be eligible for co-payment / co-insurance assistance. Our Financial Counselor and Billing staff will follow up to determine if funds are available for your diagnosis and prescribed treatment.
Your first visit may take more than an hour as we like to address any questions or concerns you may have.
